अभग्नाः घटाः 

Short Story in Sanskrit

एकदा काशीनगरे चारदत्तः नाम एकः कुलालः अवसत्। सः घटनिर्माणेन जीवनं करोति स्म। एकस्मिन् ग्रीष्मकालदिने एकः स्थूलग्राहकः अन्तः आगत्य चारुदत्तं उच्चैः आह्वयत्। "भोः अद्य यदा अहम् क्षीरं उष्णं कुर्वन आसं तदा एकः मार्जारः धावित्वा मम घटस्य उपरि अपतत्। घटश्च भग्नः। अत्र पश्य मया आनीतान् खण्डान् तदा अन्यः ग्राहकः अपि अन्तः प्राविशत्। 

चारुदत्तं दृष्ट्वा अवदत् "अरे ह्यः प्रातः मम गृहे तव घटः अधः पतित्वा भग्नः अभवत्।

तृतीयः कृष्णवर्णीयः ग्राहकः अपि आपणं प्राविशत्।  तस्य नासिका दीर्घा आसीत्। सः चारुदत्तं दुःखेन न्यवेदयत्। "भोः तव घटाः उत्तमाः परन्तु कस्मिंश्चित् दिने ते भग्नाः भविष्यन्ति एव। 

एतेषां आक्षेपं श्रुत्वा कुलालः दुःखितः अभवत्।  सः घटानां निर्माणं त्यक्तवान्। "अहम् देव्याः वरं प्राप्स्यामि" इति संकल्पितवान्। गृहात् बहिः आगत्य सः वनं प्रति प्रस्थानं अकरोत्। 

सः तत्र अश्वत्थतरोः अधः पद्मासने उपविश्य देव्याः प्रसन्नमुखम् ध्यातुं आरभत्। सन्तुष्टा देवी वरं अददात्। 

चारुदत्तः प्रार्थयत् "मम ग्राहकाः निवेदयन्ति यत मया मृत्तिकया निर्मित्ता घटाः सर्वदा भग्नाः भवन्ति इति। अतः मम इयं प्रार्थना यत एते घटाः अच्छेद्या भवेयुः " इति। देवी तस्य इच्छाम् अङ्ग्यकरोत्। सन्तुष्टः चारुदत्तः गृहं प्रत्यागतवान्। 

सः सर्वान् ग्राहकान् आह्वयत्। "सर्वे अत्र पश्यन्तु। मम घटाः मायिकाः'' इत्युक्त्वा सः घटं अपातयत्। पतितः घटः भग्नः न अभवत्।   

तत्र स्थितानां जनानां आश्चर्यं। मासन्तरे चारुदात्तः सहस्रघटानां विक्रयाणं कृतवान्। केशाश्चन् दिनानाम् अनन्तरं आपने जनसम्मर्दः न्यूनः अभवत्।   

आपणात् बहिः तस्य ग्राहकः नारायणः छत्रं गृहीत्वा द्विचक्रिकया गच्छन् आसीत्। "अरे नारायण किं युष्मभ्यं मम घटाः न रोचन्ते?" इति चारुदत्तः आक्रोशत्।  

नारायणः अवदत् "तव घटाः उत्तमाः। यद्यपि वयं तेषां विक्षेपणं कुर्याम् तथापि ते भग्नाः न भवति। अतः वयं अत्र न आगच्छामः" इति।   एवं ग्राहकानाम् आगमनं समाप्तम् अभवत्।  चारुदत्तः तस्य वाणिज्ये दोषम् अवगतवान्।  पुनः वनं गत्वा देव्याः उपासनाम् अकरोत्। 

"मम घटाः अभग्नाः मा भवतु। यथा ते आसन् तथैव कृपया ते भवन्तु" इति प्रर्थितवान्।  देवी "तथास्तु" इति अवदत्। 

परेद्युः प्रातः यदा चारुदत्तः विपणि गतवान तदा कलहः आसीत् तत्र। सर्वेषां हस्ते भग्नाः घटा आसन। चारुदत्तः विहस्य अन्तर्गतः।         

                               

Unbroken Pots

(Short Story)

Once a potter named Charudatta lived in a city called Kashi. He made his livelihood by making pots. One summer day, a stout customer came in the stire and loudly called Charudatta. Hey! This morning when I was boiling milk a cat ran and crashed into my pot. Now see here the broken pieces I brought. Then another customer also entered inside.

On seeing Charudatta, he said, "Hey! this morning in my house, your pot fell and broke."

A third dark skinned customer also walked in. He had a long nose. He told Charudatta with sadness "Your pots are good, but someday they are getting broken."

One hearing these complaints, the potter became sad. He stopped making pots. 

He swore to ask boon from Devi, Outside his house he went towards the forest. There, he sat under a Banyaan tree in Padmasana, meditated on Devi's smiling face. The Devi being pleades, conferred a boon. Charudatta asked, "My customers are complaining that the pots I make always break.

Therefor, my request is that they stay unbreakable." She agreed to his request. A happy Charudatta returned home.

He called all his customers. "You all see here, my pots are magical." and so saying, he dropped a pot but it didn't break.

The crowd standing there were wonderstruck. At the end of the month Charudatta had sold 1000 pots. After some days however the crowd lessened.

HIs customer Narayana was outside his shop going on a bike holding an umbrella. "Hey Narayana, don't you all like my pots anymore?" exclaimed Charudatta."

"Your pots are great. Even though we may throw it they never break. Therefore, we don't come anymore" In this manner. the arrival of his customers completely stopped. Charudatta realized the mistake he made in business. Once again, he went to the forest and worshipped Devi.

"Please don't make my pots unbreakable. Let them be as they were earlier,'' he pleaded. Devi agreed.

Next morning when Charudutta went to his shop a quarrel arose. Broken pots were there in everyone's hand Charudutta Smiled and entered his shop.
