Transliteration:

Dātā Pratigr̥hītā Cha Śuddhirdeyaṁ CHa Dhrmayuk

Deśakālō Cha Dānānāmṅganyetāni Ṣad Viduḥ

Meaning (English):

Giver, taker, purity, thing to be given, place and time – these are the six parts of donation.


आनन्दाश्रूणि रोमाञ्चो बहुमानः प्रियं वचः ।

तथानुमोदता पात्रे दानभूषणपञ्चकम् ॥

Transliteration:

Ānandāśrūṇi Romāñcho Bahumānaḥ Priyaṁ Vachaḥ

Tathānumodatā Pātre Dānabhūṣaṇapañchakaṁ

Meaning (English):

Tears of joy, excitement, great respect for the taker, loving words, approval of donating to a deserving person – these are the five ornaments of charity.


अनादरो विलम्बश्च वै मुख्यं निष्ठुरं वचः ।

पश्चात्तापश्च पञ्चापि दानस्य दूषणानि च ॥

Transliteration:

Anādaro Vilambaścha Vē Mukhyaṁ Niṣṭhuraṁ Vachaḥ.

Paśchāttāpaścha Pañchāpi Dānasya Dūṣaṇāni Cha.

Meaning (English):

Disdain, delay in giving, turning away, unkind words, and regret after giving – these are the five defilements of charity.


यद् दत्त्वा तप्यते पश्चादपात्रेभ्यस्तथा च यत् ।

अश्रद्धया च यद्दानं दाननाशास्त्रयः स्वमी ॥

Transliteration:

Yad Dattvā Tapyate Paśchādapātrebhyastathā Cha Yat

Aśraddhayā Cha Yaddānaṁ Dānanāśāstrayaḥ Svamī

Meaning (English):

Repenting after giving, giving to the undeserving, and giving without faith – all these destroy the charity.


लब्धानामपि वित्तानां बोद्धव्यौ द्वावतिक्रमौ ।

अपात्रे प्रतिपत्तिश्च पात्रे चाप्रतिपादनम् ॥

Transliteration:

Labdhānāmapi Vittānāṁ Boddhavyō Dvāvatikramō

Apātre Pratipattiścha Pātre Chāpratipādanaṁ

Meaning (English):

Money is misused by the rich in two ways; By giving charity to the deserving and not to the deserving.


द्वाविमौ पुरुषौ लोके न भूतौ न भविष्यतः ।

प्रार्थितं यश्च कुरुते यश्च नार्थयते परम् ॥

Transliteration:

Dvāvimō Puruṣō Loke Na bhūtō Na Bhaviṣyataḥ

Prārthitaṁ Yaścha Kurute Yaścha Nārthayate Paraṁ

Meaning (English):

It's hard to have two types of people; One who fulfills the prayers of others, and who does not ask for help from others.

अनुकूले विधौ देयं एतः पूरयिता हरिः ।

प्रतिकूले बिधौ देयं यतः सर्वं हरिष्यति ॥

Transliteration:

Anukūle Vidhō Deyaṁ Etaḥ Pūrayitā Hariḥ

Pratikūle Bidhō Deyaṁ Yataḥ Sarvaṁ Hariṣyati

Meaning (English):

Donation should be made only when fortune is favorable, because God is the one who gives everything. Even if fate is adverse, one should give because God is also the one who takes away everything.


बोधयन्ति न याचन्ते भिक्षाद्वारा गृहे ।

दीयतां नित्यमदातुः फलमीदृशम् ॥

Transliteration:

Bodhayanti Na Yāchante Bhikshādvārā Gr̥he

Dīyatāṁ Nityamadātuḥ Falamīdr̥śaṁ

Meaning (English):

The beggars going home are not asking for alms but are giving advice to keep giving donations daily, (otherwise) we will see the consequences of non-payment!


दानेन भूतानि वशी भवन्ति दानेन वैराण्यपि यान्ति नाशम् ।

परोऽपि बन्धुत्वभुपैति दानैर्दानं हि सर्वेव्यसनानि हन्ति ॥

Transliteration:

Dānena Bhūtāni Vaśī Bhavanti Dānena Vērāṇyapi Yānti Nāśaṁ

Paro'pi Bandhutvabhupēti Dānērdānaṁ Hi Sarvevyasanāni Hanti

Meaning (English):

All beings are subjugated by charity; Hatred ends with charity. Through charity even an enemy becomes a brother; All troubles can be resolved only through charity.
