Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a great son of Bengal. He was born on 26th September in 1820 at Birsingha in Midnapur. His father was Thakurdas Bandhyopashyay. His mother was Bhagabati Devi. He took his primary education at village pathsala. At the age of nine he came to Calcutta with his father. He was admitted to Sanskrit college, Calcutta. At the age of twenty he came out of the Sanskrit College with the title 'Vidyasagar' that is ocean of learning. Later he became the Principal of the college. He was a very kind hearted man. He tried to remove the distress of the poor. People called him 'the ocean of kindness'. He was an educationist. He established schools and colleges for boys and girls. He was a social reformer. He introduced 'Widow Marriage' in our society.
