Short Moral Story in Sanskrit  The Blue Jackal (नीलशृगालः कथा) 

नीलशृगालः कथा (The story of the Blue Jackal)

कस्मिंश्चित् अरण्यप्रदेशे  चंडरवः नाम शृगालः निवसति स्म। एकदा सूर्यास्तसमये सः भोजनार्थं स्वगुहातः नगरपर्यन्तं आगतवान्। तत्र गृहाणां अवकरिकासु रात्रिभोजनशिष्टानाम् अन्वेषणं कुर्वन आसीत्। अथ पार्श्वे भषन्तः शुनकगणाः स्वदन्तान् प्रदर्श्य शृगालस्य उपरि निपत्य दशनम् आरभन्त।  

भीतः चण्डरवः शुनकमुखात् कथमपि प्रमुञ्च्य ततः पलायनं कृत्वा कस्यचन् रजकस्य गृहं प्राविशत्। स च उत्सवसमयः गृहे कोSपि नासीत्।

रजकेन वस्त्राणां वर्णानार्थं एकस्मिन् बृहत्पात्रे नीलवर्णः पूरितः। शुनकेभ्यः भयेन धावितः चण्डरवः महाभाण्डे पतितवान्।  

पात्रात् निष्क्रान्तः शृगालः चन्द्रिकायां भगवत्वासु देवसदृशः नीलवर्णः दृष्टः। शुनकाः नीलदेहेन स्थितः तं शृगालं दृष्ट्वा सः कश्चन् राक्षसमृगः इति विचिन्त्य प्राणभयात् ततः पलायितवन्तः।  

यद्यपि चंडरवः नीलवर्णं अपाकर्तुं नद्यां निमग्नः भूम्यां बिलुठितः च तथापि तस्य शरीरात् नीलवर्णः नैव अपगतः। चिन्ताक्रान्तः सः तस्य निष्प्रयोजनं प्रयत्नं अरण्यं प्रति सर्पति स्म।  

वने द्विजाः क्रूराः च मृगाः एनं नीलकायं विचित्ररूपं चंडरवः दृष्ट्वा भीताः सन्तः ततः दशसु दिक्षु धावितवन्तः। एतेषां धावतां प्राणिनां अवस्थां दृष्ट्वा शृगालस्य मनसि एकः उपायः आगतः।  

सः उच्चैः अवदत " भोः जन्तवः! गज! सिंह! व्याघ्र! मा भेतव्यं। अलं पलायनेन्। भूमण्डले उत्तमः पालकः कोSपि नास्ति इति ब्राह्मणः अभिप्रायः। 

तदेव मम सृष्टिकारणं। सः एतत् अपि माम उक्तवान "वत्स तव नामदेवं ककुद्रुमः! पृथिव्यां अवतीर्य मर्त्यलोकं परिपालय। तव राज्येन लोकाः समस्ताः सुखिनः भवन्तु"  

सर्वे मृगाः अधोमुखं कृत्वा चण्डरवस्य पादान् मनसि विचिन्त्य मूम्यां नमस्कृतवन्तः। ते प्रार्थिववन्तः, "भगवन! अस्मान विज्ञापयतु। किं कर्तव्यं? भवतः उद्देश्यं किं ? वयं अवश्य भवतः वचनं पालयामः"।  

प्रथमं चण्डरवः अन्ये शृगालाः तस्य रिपवः इति निश्चितवान्। अतः तान् अरण्यात बहिः सुदूरं निष्कास्य सिंहाय मंत्रिपदम अददात।     

व्याघ्रः तस्य शयनगृहरक्षणं करोति स्म। वृकः द्वारपालकः अभवत्। गजेन भोजनसेवा कृता। एवमेव प्रतिदिनं मारितान पशून आनीय ते शृगालाय अददुः।  

चित्रकेण परिवेषितं   मांसं यथेष्टं संखाद्य यदा सुप्तः आसीत् तदा वानरः तस्मै तालपत्रेण वीजनम अकरोत्। गच्छता कालेन चण्डरवः स्थूलः अलसः च भूत्वा राज्यपदे अमोदत्।    

एकदा पूर्णिमायां रात्रौ उपविष्टः सः मृगाणां सभायां नीतिं बोधयति स्म। तदा बहुदूरात वायुना आगतं शृगालरवं श्रुत्वा तस्मिन् अत्यन्तं उत्कण्ठता सञ्जाता। दीर्घकालान्तरं स्वजातीयं चीत्कारं श्रुत्वा तस्य राज्यपदं विस्मृतवान। 

सम्मोहात उन्मदितः सः उच्चैः "हू हू'' इति शृगालस्वरेण विरावं कर्तुम् आरभत्। क्षणमात्रेण अयं वञ्चकः इति मृगाः अजानन्। सर्वे जन्तवः तीक्षैः दन्तैः क्रूरैःनखैः च प्रतारकं नीलकायं शृगालं विदार्य तं स्वर्गलोकं प्रेषितवन्तः।     

English Translation:

Moral Story in Sanskrit of the Blue Jackal   

In a certain forest, there lived a jackal by name Chandarava. Once during dusk he came to the outskirts of a town from his cave in search of food. 

There, he was searching for dinner lestovers in the trash cans of houses. Barking dogs nearby showing their teeth jumped on the jackal and started biting him.

Chandarava, being scared somehow escaped from the jaws of the dogs, fled from there, and entered a washer man's house. I was festival season and no one was home.

The washer man had filled a huge barrel with blue dye for the purpose of dying the clothes.The jackal who was running away from the dogs fell into the huge vessel. The jackal after emerging from the pot looking as blue as Lord Krishna in the moonlight.

The dogs on seeing the blue bodied jackal sitting there thought he was an animal like a demon and fearing for their lives fled from there.

Even though Chandarava immersed himself in the river or rolled on the floor the blue color from his body didn't go away. Being concerned he gave up his unfruitful effort and set forth slunk towards the forest.

In the forest, birds, wild four-legged creatures on seeing this 'Bluebodied' Chandarava being afraid fled from there in 10 different directions. On seeing the fleeing of these animals, a plan entered the mind of Chandarava.

He loudly exclaimed, "Dear animals, elephant, lion, tiger, fear not. Stop running. It is Brahma's opinion that there is no great ruler on earth. And thus is the cause of my creation. He further stated, "Son, your name is Kukudruma! Descend to the earth and rule it. In your rule, let there be happiness in the world."

All the animals bent down and prayed to his feet and performed salutations. They asked, "Lord, please instruct us. What is our duty? What is your intent? We shall comply with obedience."

First, Chandarava decided that the other jackals were his enemies. So he threw them out of the forest quite far away and gave the minister post to the Lion. 

The tiger guarded his bedchambers. The wolf became his doorkeeper. The elephant was in charge of his food. In this manner, they brought the killed animals and gave in to the jackal.

He ate the meat served by the zebra to his satisfaction and while he was asleep the monkey fanned his with a palm leaf. As time went by the lowborn Chandarava became fat and lazy and enjoyed a royal life.

Once on a full moon night he was instructing morals in the assembly of animals. Upon hearing the faraway cries of the jackal carried by the wind he developed a lot of longing. After a long time upon hearing the cries of his clan he forgot his royal status. 

Being mad and out of confusion he began loudly howling "Hu Hu." Instantly, the animals knew he was cheat, All the animals tore open the cheat and blue bodied jackal with their sharp teeth and nails and sent him to heaven.
