Sanskrit slokas on friendship/ मित्रता पर संस्कृत श्लोक-
आतुरे व्यसने प्राप्ते दुर्भिक्षे शत्रु संकटे।
राजद्वारे श्वशाने च यस्तिष्ठति स वान्धवः।।
Transliteration-
Ature Vyasane Prāpte Durbhikṣe Śatru Sankaṭe.
Rājadvāre Śvaśāne Ca yastiṣṭhati Sa Vāndhavaḥ.
Hindi Translation-
सच्चा मित्र वह है जो बीमार होने पर, संकट में, अकाल में, शत्रु से संकट में पड़ने पर दरबार और श्मशान में रहता है।
English Translation-
The real friend is the one who stays in the court and in the crematorium when he is sick, in trouble, in famine, when he is endangered by the enemy.

कश्चित् कस्यचिन्मित्रं, न कश्चित् न कस्यचित् रिपुः।
अर्थतस्तु निबध्यन्ते, मित्राणि रिपवस्तथा।।
Transliteration-
Kaśchit Kasyachinmitraṁ, Na Kaśchit Na Kasyachit Ripuḥ.
Arthatstu Nibadhyante, Mitrāṇi Ripavastathā.
Hindi Translation-
न कोई किसी का मित्र है और न ही शत्रु, कार्यवश ही लोग मित्र और शत्रु बनते है।
English Translation-
No one is a friend nor an enemy, it is because of work that people become friends and enemies.

न विश्वसेात्कुमित्रे च मित्रे चापि न विश्वसेत्।
कदाचित्कुपितं मित्रं सर्वं गुह्यं प्रकाशयेत्।।
Transliteration-
Na Viśvasotkumitre Cha Mitre Chāpi Na Viśvaset.
Kadāchitkupitaṁ Mitraṁ Sarvaṁ Guhyaṁ Prakāśayet.
Hindi Translation-
कुमित्र पर विश्वास नहीं करना चाहिए और मित्र पर भी विश्वास नहीं करना चाहिए। कभी कुपित होने पर मित्र भी आपकी गुप्त बातें सबको बता सकता हैं।
English Translation-
One should not trust a friend and one should not believe in a friend either. Sometimes even friends can tell your secret things when they are angry.
विद्या मित्रं प्रवासेषु भार्या मित्रं गॄहेषु च।
व्याधितस्यौषधं मित्रं धर्मो मित्रं मॄतस्य च।।
Transliteration-
Vidhyā Mitraṁ Pravāseṣu Bhāryā Mitraṁ Hr̥r̥heṣu Cha.
Vyādhitasyauṣadhaṁ Mitraṁ Dharmo Mitraṁ Mr̥r̥tasya Cha.
Hindi Translation-
प्रवास में विद्या मित्र होती है, घर में पत्नी मित्र होती है, रोग में औषधि मित्र होती है और मृतक का मित्र धर्म होता है।

English Translation-
Education is a friend in travel, a wife is a friend at home, medicine is a friend in illness and religion is a friend of the deceased.
माता मित्रं पिता चेती स्वभावात् त्रतयं हितम्।
कार्यकारणतश्चान्ये भवन्ति हितबुद्धयः।।
Transliteration-
Mātā Mitraṁ Pitā Chetī Svabhāvāt Tratayaṁ Hitaṁ.
Kāryakāraṇataśchanye Bhavanti HItabuddhayaḥ.
Hindi Translation-
माता पिता और मित्र हमारे कल्याण के बिषय में निःस्वार्थ भावसे सोचते हैं इनके अलावा सभी अपने स्वार्थ से ऐसी भावना रखते हैं।
English Translation-
Parents and friends think selflessly about our welfare, apart from this, everyone has such a feeling for their selfishness.

Transliteration-
Vivādo Dhanasambandho Yāchanaṁ Chātibhāṣaṇaṁ.

वाद-विवाद, धन के लिए सम्बन्ध बनाना, माँगना, अधिक बोलना, ऋण लेना, आगे निकलने की चाह रखना -यह सब मित्रता के टूटने में कारण बनते हैं।
English Translation-
Arguments, making relationships for money, asking, speaking more, taking loans, wanting to move ahead - all these lead to break up of friendship.

अमित्रं कुरुते मित्रं मित्रं द्वेष्टि हिनस्ति च।
कर्म चारभते दुष्टं तमाहुर्मूढचेतसम्।।
Transliteration-
Amitraṁ Kurute Mitraṁ MItraṁ Dveṣṭi Hinaśti Cha.
Karma Chārabhate Duṣṭaṁ Tamāhurmūḍachetasam.
Hindi Translation-
जो व्यक्ति शत्रु से दोस्ती करता तथा मित्र और शुभचिंतकों को दुःख देता है, उनसे ईर्ष्या-द्वेष करता है। सदैव बुरे कार्यों में लिप्त रहता है, वह मूर्ख कहलाता है।
English Translation-
The person who befriends the enemy and gives sorrow to the friend and well-wishers, has jealousy and hatred towards them. Always indulges in bad deeds, he is called a fool.
तावत्प्रीति भवेत् लोके यावद् दानं प्रदीयते।
वत्सः क्षीरक्षयं दृष्ट्वा परित्यजति मातरम्।।
Transliteration-
Tāvatprīti Bhavet Loke Yāvad Dānaṁ Pradīyate.
Vatyaḥ Kṣīrakṣayaṁ Dr̥ṣṭvā Parityajati Mātaraṁ.
Hindi Translation-
लोगों का प्रेम तभी तक रहते है जब तक उनको कुछ मिलता रहता है। मां का दूध सूख जाने के बाद बछड़ा तक उसका साथ छोड़ देता है।
English Translation-
People's love lasts only as long as they keep getting something. After the mother's milk dries up, it leaves her till the calf.
