सुखार्थिनो कुतो विद्या कुतो विद्यार्थिनः सुखं।।

Transliteration-

Sukhārthī vā Tyajet vidyam Vidyārthī Vā Tyajet Sukhaṁ.

Sukhārthino Kuto Vidyā Kuto Vidyarthinoḥ Sukhaṁ.

 English Translation-

Those Who are in pursuit of comfortable life should forget about learning/vidya and those who are in pursuit of learning should forget about comfortable living. Those who are after pleasures of life never become learned and those who want to be learned should never expect to lead an easy life as they have to toil to gain knowledge.

Transliteration-

Vidyā Vivādāya Dhanaṁ Madāya Śaktiṁ Parapī ḍanāya.

Khalasya Sādhprviparitametajgyānāya Dānāya Ca Rakśaṇāya.

English Translation-

A rogue/fool uses his/her knowledge for indulging in disputes, wealth for ostentatious living and its vulgar display, and power for harassing and troubling others. On the other hand noble and learned uses his/her knowledge to impart it to others, wealth in helping poor and needy persons and power and authority to protect the meek and downtrodden people in the society.

Transliteration-

Kokilānaṁ Svaro Rupaṁ Strinaṁ Rupaṁ PatiVrataṁ.

Vidyā Rupaṁ Kurupāṇaṁ Kśamā Rupaṁ Tapasvinaṁ.

English Translation-

A nightingale is recognized by its sweet voice, a woman by her loyalty towards her husband, ugly looking persons get recognition by their knowledge, and sages by their patience and rigorous self discipline.

दातव्यं भोक्तव्यं सति विभवे संग्रहो न कर्तव्यः। 

पश्येदं मधुकरिणा संचितमर्थं हरिष्यन्ते।।

Transliteration-

Dātavyaṁ Bhoktavyaṁ Sati Vibhave Sangraho Na Kartavyaḥ.

Paśyedaṁ Madhukariṇā Sanchitamarthaṁ Hariṣyante.

English Translation-

One should spend his/her wealth either by giving it as charity, or at least for his own consumption. A person's duty is not to earn wealth just for the sake of accumulation. The same lesson can be learnt from the fate of honey bees, whose collection of honey is plundered by others.

Transliteration-

Vastreṇa Vapuṣā Vāchā Vidyayā Vinayena Cha.

Vakāraiḥ Pañchabhiryuktaḥ Naro Bhavati Pūjitaḥ.

English Translation-

A person who has the following five qualities which start with alphabet 'व'- 'va', will be well respected in the society : (1) good dress sense (2) good physique (3) good communication skills, (4) knowledge and (5) discipline/obedience.

चिता चिंता समा हि उक्ता बिन्दुमात्र विशेषतः। 

सजीवं दहते चिन्ता निर्जीवं दहते चिता।।

Transliteration-

Chitā Chiṇta Samā Hi Uktā Bindumātra Viśeṣataḥ.

Sajīvaṁ Dahate Chintā Nirjivaṁ Dahate Chitā.


English Translation-

(In the Sanskrit language) (both Chita -the fire arranged to burn a person after his/her death), and Chinta- worry/depression are very similar in writing, all the difference they have is just a dot at the top. Even their meaning have a quite similarity, while Chinta (worry/depression) burn a person when he/she is alive, Chinta burn the person when he/she is dead.

Transliteration-

Asthiraṁ Jīvitaṁ Loke Yauvanaṁ Dhanamasthiraṁ.

Asthiraṁ Putradārādi Dharmaḥ Kīrtirdvayaṁ Sthiraṁ.

English Translation-

In the world the life span, Youth and wealth of every person, as also his wife, sons etc., are uncertain and not permanent. Only the name and fame one gets due to observance of religious austerity remain steadfast.

English Translation-

People who are courageous, will always be able to swim across the ocean of sorrows and achieve great success, and thus they become rich, Hence it is said that courage is the best means of achieving success.

Transliteration-

Pramāditanāṁ Na Vittāni Na Vidyā Vanitāpi Cha.

Na Hi Madyājuṣā Kvāpi Sādhanānyatha Dhīścha Hrīḥ.

English Translation-

People who perform their job carelessly and negligently can neither be rich nor well educated. They even may not have a wife (and a family). And likewise, people addicted to liquor are also devoid of means of livelihood, wisdom, modesty and shyness.

Disclosure of one's age, financial status, weak points of the family, use of secret 'Mantras', sexual intercourse, use of medicines, donations, showing respect or disrespect to someone, all these nine activities should always remain hidden from outsiders.

Transliteration-

Nahi Buddhigunainaiva Suhridāmarthadarśanaṁ

Kāryasiddhiḥ Pathaḥ Sūkṣmaḥ Snehā Apyupalabhyate.

English Translation-

One cannot acquire wealth just by being intelligent and virtuous, because the path of achieving wealth will always be very narrow and tricky. But, it can be achieved through kind nature and determination.

आत्मा यस्य वशे नास्ति कुतस्तस्य परे जनाः। 

आत्मानं वशमानीय त्रैलोक्ये वर्तते वशे।।

Transliteration-

Atmā Yasya Vaśe Nāsti Kutastasya Pare Janāḥ.

Atmānaṁ Vaśamānīya Trailokye Vartate Vaśē.

English Translation-

How can a person have the power to control other persons if he does not have control over himself? However, if he has full control over his state of mind the entire World can be submissive towards him.

Transliteration-

Alasasya Kuto Vidyā Avidyasya Kuto Dhanaṁ.

Adhanasya Kuto Mitraṁ Amitrasya Kuto sukhaṁ.

English Translation-

A lazy person can never acquire knowledge or a skill, and such a foolish person can never acquire wealth and remain poor. A poor person has no friends and such a person cannot remain happy in his life.

आत्मार्थं जीवलोकेस्मिनको न जीवति मानवः। 

परं परोपकारार्थं यो जीवति स जीवति।।

Transliteration-

Atmārthaṁ Jīvalokesminako Na Jīvati Mānavaḥ.

Paraṁ Paropakārarthaṁ Yo Jīvati Sa Jīvati.

English Translation-

Who on this Earth does not live for his/her own welfare? However, only a person who also actively engages oneself in charitable work of helping the poor and needy persons lives a meaningful real life.

Transliteration-

Acharaḥ Paramo Dharmaḥ Achāraḥ Paramaṁ Tapaḥ.

Achāraḥ Paramaṁ Gyānaṁ Achārāktiṁ Na Sādhyate.

Following customs of a religion, is the best of all Dharma. Following customs of a religion, is the best of all Meditation. Following customs of a religion, is the best of all Knowledge. What not can be achieved by following the customs?

धनानि जीवितं चैव परार्थे प्राज्ञ उत्सृजेत्। 

तन्निमित्तो वरं त्यागो विनाशो नियते सति।।

Transliteration-

Dhanāni Jivitaṁ Chaiva Parārthe Prāñje Utsr̥jet.

Tannimitto Varaṁ Tyago Vināśo Niyate Sati.

English Translation-

A wise and wealthy person should always give away his wealth for saving the lives of needy people. It is preferable to spend it for such noble cause, because ultimately all wealth is destined to be destroyed.

अहो प्रच्छादितकार्यनैपुण्यं परमं खेल। 

यत्तुषाग्निरिवानर्चिदहन्नपि लक्ष्यते।।

Aho Prachchāditakāryenaipunyaṁ Paramaṁ Khela.

Yuttuṣāgnirivānarchidahannapi Lakṣyate.

English Translation-

Wicked people are very skilled committing crime hidden from the view of society, just like a flame of fire hidden under a heap of chaff (which is visible only after burning everything.)

आतुरे नियमो नास्ति बाले वृद्धे तथैव च। 

पराचाररते चैव एष धर्मः सनातनः।।

Transliteration-

Ature Niyamo Nāsti Bāle Vr̥ddhe Tathaiva Cha .

Parāchārarate Chaiva Eṣa DHarmaḥ Sanātanaḥ.

English Translation-

It is ordained in the 'Sanaatan Dharm', (the Religion of Hindus), That sick or suffering people, children, aged persons as also persons engaged in helping the needy persons, need not (strictly) observe the established rules of good and righteous behavior as prescribed in the Shastras.

आत्मज्ञः शोचवान्दस्तपस्वी विजितेन्द्रियः। 

धर्मकृद्वेदविद्यावित्सात्त्विको देवयोनितां।।

Transliteration-

Atmañgaḥ Śochavāndastapasvī Vijitendriyaḥ.

Dharmakr̥tvedavidyāvitsāttviko Devayonitāṁ.

English Translation-

A person who is well aware of his own self, practices cleanliness, is liberal and restraint, is ascetic in nature, and has full control over his sensory organs and passion, is virtuous and well versed in Vedic knowledge, and is also pure and honest, such a person is addressed as great and honorable just like a demi-god.

 सुवर्णपुष्पां पृथ्वीं चिन्तन्ति पुरुषस्त्रयः। 

सूरश्च कृतविद्यश्च यस्य जानाति सेवितुं।।

Transliteration-

Suvarṇapuṣpāṁ Pr̥thvīṁ Chintanti Puruṣastrayaḥ.

Suraścha Kr̥tavidyaścha Yasya Jānāti Sevituṁ.

English Translation-

Earth is like a golden flower (beautiful and valuable) for the following three kind of people: people who are brave, the learned ones and the people who know to enjoy ( both  good times and bad times, with no complaints).

यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते रमन्ते तत्र देवता। 

यत्र एता न पूज्यन्ते सर्वास्तत्र अफला क्रियाः।।

Transliteration-

Yatra Nāryastu Pūjyante Ramante Tatra Devatā.

Yatra Etā Na Pūjyante Sarvāstatra Afalā Kriyāḥ.

English Translation-

Good will always bless the places where the woman are respected and treated well. And where the women are disrespected, what ever the rituals people perform, all of them will fail and will have no result.

अनुकूले विधौ देयं यतः पूरयते हरिः। 

प्रतिकुले विधौ देयं यतः सर्वं हरिष्यति।।

Transliteration-

Anukūle Vidhau Deyaṁ Pūrayate Hariḥ.

Pratikule Vidhau Deyaṁ Yataḥ Sarvaṁ Hariṣyati.

English Translation-

If the destiny is favorable to a person all his wishes are fulfilled by the God Vishnu, but if destiny is unfavorable to  him he loses whatever he has got.

आयं पश्यन्व्ययं कुर्यातायादल्पतरं व्ययं। 

आयाभावे व्ययं कुर्यन्कुबेरोSपि विनश्यति।।

Transliteration-

Ayaṁ PAśyanvyayaṁ Kuryāyādalpataraṁ Vyayaṁ.

Ayābhāve Vyayaṁ Kuryankuberoapi Vinaśyati.

English Translation-

One must incur expenditure after assessing his/her income, and such expenditure must always be lesser than the income. However if the money(saving) is spent in absence of any income or its deficiency, even Kubhera's treasure will turn empty. (Kubhera's is the God of riches and treasure keeper of God's treasure).

Abhivādanaśīlasya Nityaṁ Vr̥ddhopasevinaḥ.

Chatvāri Tasya Vardhante Ayuḥ Pragyā Yaśo Balaṁ.

English Translation-

Those who respect their elders by always saluting them, helping them and nursing them, they are blessed with growth in four aspects i.e., life span, wisdom, fame and strength.

न जातु कामः कामानामुपभोगेन शाम्यति। 

हविषा कृष्णवर्त्मेव भूय एव अभिवर्तते।। 

Transliteration-

Na Jātu Kāmaḥ Kāmānāmupabhogena Śāmyati.

Haviṣā Kr̥ṣṇavartmeva Bhūya Eva Abhivartate.

English Translation-

Man's desire is not satisfied by pleasures according to desires. That is, the desire of the person still remains. In fact, it starts growing more, just like adding fuel to the fire, it gets ignited more.

Laziness in a person destroys his in intelligence, wealth, duration of life, fame and strength, On the hand those persons who are not lazy, are free from all these shortcomings.

Transliteration-

Kokilānāṁ Svaro Rupaṁ Strīṇaṁ Rupaṁ Pativr̥taṁ.

Vidyārupaṁ Kurupāṇāṁ Kṣamā Rupaṁ Tapasvināṁ.

English Translation-

The dark cuckoo bird is embellished because of its sweet melodic voice, and ladies are enhanced for their magnificence, commitment and love towards their spouses. Additionally, people with monstrous appearance are decorated for their insight and learning, and the plain people for their resilience and pardoning.

English Translation-

 Voracity in an individual is the reason for his/her concerns and is consistently sketchy, since, supposing that an individual is seized by covetousness, he/she loses the ability to separate among great and awful , thus he/she is exposed to the dread of everything around him/her.

न दानतुल्यं मन्यदस्ति न सत्य तुल्यं 

वृतमन्यदस्ति। 

न शीलतुल्यं शुभमन्यदस्ति न क्षान्ति तुल्यं

Transliteration-

Na Dānatulyaṁ MAnyadasti Na Satya Tulyaṁ Vr̥tamanyadasti.

Na Śīlatulyaṁ Śubhamanyadasti Na Kṣānti Tulyaṁ Hitamanyadasti.

English Translation-

Wealth  is of no use if you cannot donate part of it.

No righteous activity is comparable to truthfulness.

No virtue is comparable to having a good moral 

character, and

 no other qualities are comparable to patience 

and tolerance.

Transliteration-

Amr̥taṁ Chaiva Mr̥tyuścha Dvayaṁ Dehe Pratiṣṭhitaṁ.

Mr̥tyumāpadyate Mohātsatyenāpadyate Amr̥taṁ.

English Translation-

Death and immortality both exist together in human body, Death is due to ignorance, Whereas immortality is achieved by leading a virtuous life adhering to truthfulness (by  performing good deeds & helping others person when alive, a person's name/ fame stays forever).

माता यस्य गृहे नास्ति भार्या चाप्रियवादिनी। 

अरण्यं तेन गन्तव्यं यथारण्यं तथा गृहम्।। 

Transliteration-

Mātā Yasya Gr̥he Nāsti Bhāryā Chāpriyavadinī.

Araṇyaṁ Tena Gantavyaṁ Yathāraṇyaṁ Tathā Gr̥haṁ.

English Translation-

The one who has neither mother nor woman beloved, he should go to the forest because for him both the house and the forest are the same.

कामधेनुगुणा विद्या ह्ययकाले फलदायिनी। 

प्रवासे मातृसदृशा विद्या गुप्तं धनं स्मृतम्।। 

Transliteration-

Kāmadhenuguṇā Vidyā Hyayakāle Falaḍayinī.

Pravāse Mātr̥sadr̥śā Vidyā Guptaṁ Dhanaṁ Smr̥taṁ.

English Translation-

Vidya has the same qualities as Kamadhenu, gives fruit even in bad times, is like a mother during migration and has hidden wealth.

चन्दनं शीतलं लोके, चन्दनादपि चन्द्रमाः। 

चन्द्रचन्दनयोर्मध्ये शीतला साधुसंगतिः।।

Transliteration-

Chandanaṁ Śītalaṁ Loke, Chandanādapi Chandramāḥ.

Chandrachandanayormadhye Śītalā Sādhusangatiḥ.

English Translation-

   Sandalwood is considered to be the coolest paste in the world, but it is said that the moon gives more coolness than that, but apart from all this, the company of good friends gives more coolness and peace to everyone.

Parasparaviyuktau Tu Vittatyāgau Vidambanā.

If the rich have a mind to donate money, it is indeed a great merit. If the generous people have enough money it is also a merit, as they prefer donating rather than keeping themselves. It is an ironical fact that wealth and generosity do not do together.

The industrialist Purush Singh gets the money himself. It is only by luck that this coward says it. Instead of relying on luck, you should make effort as much as you can. If you do not get success even on trying, then you should find out where the mistake was made.

यावज्जीवं च तत्कुर्याद्येन प्रेत्यं सुखं वसेत्।। 

Transliteration-

Divasenaiva Tatkuryādyen Rātrau Sukhaṁ Vaset.

Yāvajjīvaṁ Ca Tatkuryādyena Pretyaṁ Sukhaṁ Vaset.

EnglishTranslation-

During daytime we should do such deeds so that we sleep happily during the night. We should also do such virtuous deeds during our lifetime, which will entitle us a happy and peaceful existence in our next cycle of birth.

 वस्त्रेण वपुषा वाचा विद्यया विनयेन च। 

वकारैः पञ्चभिर्युक्तः नरो भवति पूजितः।। 

Transliteration-

Vastreṇa Vapuṣā Vācā Vidyayā Vinayen Ca.

Vakāraiḥ Panchabhiryuktaḥ Naro Bhavati Pūjitaḥ.

English Translation-

A person who has the following five qualities which start with alphabet 'व' - 'va', will be well respected in the society: 1.good dress sense, 2. good physique, 3. good communication skills, 4. knowledge and 5. discipline/ obedience.

अगुणस्य हतं रूपं अशीलस्य हतं कुलम्। 

असिद्धेस्तु हता विद्या अभोगस्य हतं धनम्।। 

Transliteration-

Aguṇasya Hataṁ Rupaṁ Aśīlasya Hataṁ Kulaṁ.

Asidvestu Hata Vidyā abhogasya Hataṁ Dhanaṁ.

English Translation-

Beauty is spoiled, if one has no good qualities. Good name of the family is lost, due to a family member with bad character. If not well practiced, knowledge in a human brain is lost. If not used for good deeds wealth is considered as lost.

आत्मद्वेषाद्भवेन्मृत्युः परद्वेषाद्धनक्षयः। 

राजद्वेषाद्भवेन्नाशो बृह्मद्वेषात्कुलक्षयः।। 

Transliteration-

Ātmadveṣādbhavennāśo Br̥hmadveṣātkulakṣayaḥ.

Rājadveṣādbhavennāśo Br̥hmadveṣātkulakṣayaḥ.

English Translation-

Hatred towards one's own self may result in a person's death, and being inimical towards others results in loss of money or wealth. Enmity with the King by a person results in his destruction, and hatred towards "Brahma" (The sacred Religious knowledge of Vedas and Brahmins) results in decay of the race.

यथा खनन खनित्रेण नरो वार्योधिगछति। 

तथा गुरुगताम विद्यां शुश्रूषुरधिगच्छति।। 

Transliteration-

Yathā Khanan Khanitreṇa Naro Vāyordhigacchati.

Tatha Gurugatāṁ Vidyāṁ Śuśrūṣuradhigacchati.

English Translation-

The more profound one burrows the earth, the more water he/she gets from the lower part of the earth. Likewise the more an understudy serves the expert and inquiries, the more he/she accomplishes information.

कामं क्रोधं तथा लोथं स्वादु श्रृंगार कौतुके। 

अतिनिद्राSतिसेवां च विद्यार्थी ह्यष्ट वर्जयेत।। 

Transliteration-

Kāmaṁ Krodhaṁ Tathā LoThaṁ Svādu Śr̥ngār Kautuke.

Atinidrā Atisevāṁ Ca Vidyārthī Hyaṣta Varjayet.

English Translation-

Want, outrage, eagerness, taste, suggestion, intensity, a lot rest and excessively tending these 8 ought to be avoided by an understudy.

 प्रमादिनां न वित्तानि न विद्या वनितापि च। 

न हि मद्यजुषा क्वापि साधनान्यथ धीश्च ह्रीः।। 

Transliteration-

Pramādināṁ Na Vittāni Na Vidyā Vanitāpi Ca.

Na Hi Madyajuṣā Kvāpi Sādhanānyath thiścha Hrīḥ.

English Translation-

People who perform their job carelessly and negligently can neither be rice nor well educated. They even may not have a wife and like wise, people addicted to liquor are also devoid of , means of livelihood, wisdom, modesty and shyness.

षड गुणाः पुरुषेणेह त्यक्तव्या न कदाचनः। 

सत्यं दानम अनालस्यं अनुसूया क्षमा धृतिः।। 

Transliteration-

Ṣaḍa Guṇāḥ Puruṣeṇeha Tyaktavyā Na Kadāchanaḥ.

Satyaṁ Dānaṁ Anālaśyaṁ Anusūyā Kṣamā Dr̥tiḥ.

English Translation-

An honorable individual ought to never surrender these six characteristics, in particular holding fast to truth, liberality, dependability, liberated from desire, absolution and commitment.

ये मे मतमिदं नित्यमनुतिष्ठन्ति मानवाः। 

श्रद्धावन्तोSनसूयन्तो मुच्यन्ते तेSपि कर्मभिः।।3.31।। 

English Transliteration-

Ye me matamidaṁ nityamanutiṣṭhanti mānvāḥ.

Śraddhāvantoanasūyanto Muchyante te api karmabhiḥ. 

English Translation-

People who are respectful, devoid of fish, and always follow/follow my instructions are also freed from the bondage of action.

श्रेयान् स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात् स्वनुष्ठितात्। 

स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः।।3.35।।  

English Transliteration-

Śreyān svadharmo viguṇaḥ paradharṁat svanuṣṭhitāt.

Scadharme nidhanaṁ śreyaḥ paradharmo bhayāvahaḥ.

English Translation-

Better a poor religion than no religions at all. Death in one own religion is also relatively good, other religions are terrible.
