Vidur Niti

One of the various characters in the Mahabharata is Mahatma Vidur. Mahatma Vidur is considered to be the incarnation of religion.The policy by which he used to explain Dhritarashtra. It was called Vidur Niti.

Sanskrit Verse-

निषेवते प्रशस्तानी निन्दितानी न सेवते।
अनास्तिकः श्रद्धान एतत् पण्डितलक्षणम्।।1।।

English Transliteration

Niṣevate Praśastānī Ninditanī Na Sevate

Anāstikaḥ Śraddhāna Etat Paṇḍitalakśaṇaṁ।।1।।

Meaning-Those who do good deeds and abstain from bad deeds, as well as those who believe in God and are faithful, have the virtues of being virtuous pundits.


 Sanskrit Verse-

न ह्रश्यत्यात्मसम्माने नावमानेन तप्यते।
गंगो ह्रद इवाक्षोभ्यो य: स पंडित उच्यते।।2।।

English Transliteration

Na Hriśyatyātmātmasammāne Nāvamānena Tapyate

Gango Hrida Ivākśobhyo Yaḥ Sa Paṇdita Ucchate।।2।।

Meaning-One who does not flower with happiness when he is respected and respected, and does not get angry when he is disrespected, and whose mind is not disturbed like the tank of Ganga(river) is called a gyani.


Sanskrit Verse-

अनाहूत: प्रविशति अपृष्टो बहु भाषते।
अविश्वस्ते विश्वसिति मूढ़चेता नराधम: ।।3।।

English Transliteration

Anāhūtaḥ Prabiśati Apriṣtho Bahu Bhaṣate

Aviśvaste Viśvasiti Mūḍhachetā Narādhamaḥ।।3

Meaning-A lowly person with a foolish mind walks in without being called, starts speaking without asking, and trusts those who are not trustworthy.


Sanskrit Verse-

अर्थम् महान्तमासाद्य विद्यामैश्वर्यमेव वा।
विचरत्यसमुन्नद्धो य: स पंडित उच्यते।।4।।

English Transliteration

Arthaṁ Mahāntamāsādya Vidyāmaiśvaryameva

Vicharatyasamunnaddhyo Yaḥ Sa Paṇdita Uchyate।।4।।

Meaning- A person who does not flaunt even after getting a lot of wealth, knowledge and wealth is called a Paṇḍit.


Sanskrit Verse-

एक: पापानि कुरुते फलं भुङ्क्ते महाजन: ।
भोक्तारो विप्रमुच्यन्ते कर्ता दोषेण लिप्यते।।5।।

English Transliteration

Ekaḥ Pāpāni Kurute Falaṁ Bhunkte Mahājanaḥ

Bhoktāro Vipramucchante Kartā Doṣeṇa Lipyate।।5।।

Meaning- Man alone sins and many people enjoy it. Enjoyers are saved; But the sinner is guilty.


Sanskrit Verse-

एकं हन्यान्न वा हन्यादिषुर्मुक्तो धनुष्मता।
बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतोत्सृष्टा हन्याद् राष्ट्रम सराजकम्।।6।।

English Transliteration

Ekaṁ Hanyānna Vā Hanyādiṣurmukto Dhanuṣmatā

Buddhirbuddhimatotsriṣṭā Hanyād Rāṣtram Sarājakaṁ।।6।।

Meaning- The arrow left by an archer is possible to kill or not kill any one. But the wisdom used by the wise can destroy the entire nation along with the king.


Sanskrit Verse-

एकमेवाद्वितीयम तद् यद् राजन्नावबुध्यसे।
सत्यम स्वर्गस्य सोपानम् पारवारस्य नैरिव।।7।।

English Transliteration

Ekamevādvitīyam Tad Yad Rājannāvabudhyase

Satyam Svargasya Sopānaṁ Pāravārasya Nairiva।।7।।

Meaning- Vidur while explaining Dhritarashtra says: Rajan! Just as the boat is the only means to get across the ocean, in the same way the truth is the only ladder to heaven, nothing else, but you are not understand it.


Sanskrit Verse-

एको धर्म: परम श्रेय: क्षमैका शान्तिरुक्तमा।
विद्वैका परमा तृप्तिरहिंसैका सुखावहा।।8।।

English Transliteration

Eko Dharmaḥ Parama Śreyaḥ Kṣamaikā Śāntiruktamā

Vidvaikā Paramā Tr̥iptirahiṇsaika Sukhāvahā।।8।।

Meaning- Only religion is the ultimate benefactor; the only forgiveness is the best way to peace. One discipline is the ultimate satisfaction and the only non-violence is happiness.


Sanskrit Verse-

द्वाविमौ पुरुषौ राजन स्वर्गस्योपरि तिष्ठत: ।
प्रभुश्च क्षमया युक्तो दरिद्रश्च प्रदानवान्।।9।।

English Transliteration

Dvāvimau   Paruṣau Rājana Svargasyopati Tiṣṭhataḥ

Prabhuścha Kṣamayā Gukto Daridraścha Pradānavān।।9।।

Meaning- Vidur says to Dhritarashtra: Rajan! These two types of men also find place above heaven - forgiving in spite of being powerful and giving charity even when poor.


Sanskrit Verse-

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारम नाशनमात्मन: ।
काम: क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत्।।10।।

English Transliteration

Trividha Narakasyedaṁ Dvāram Nāśanamātmanaḥ

Kāmaḥ Krodhastathā Lobhastasmādetattrayaṁ Tyajet।।10।।

Meaning- Kama, anger, and greed - these are the three doors of hell destroying the soul, so all three should be discarded.


Sanskrit Verse-

पन्चाग्न्यो मनुष्येण परिचर्या: प्रयत्नत: ।
पिता माताग्निरात्मा च गुरुश्च भरतर्षभ।।11।।

English Transliteration

Panchagnyo Manuṣyeṇa Paricharyāḥ Prayatnataḥ

Pitā Mātāgnirātmā Cha Guruścha Bharatarṣabha।।11।।

Meaning- Bharat Best! Father, Mother Agni, Soul and Guru - Human beings should serve these five Agni diligently.


Sanskrit Verse-

षड् दोषा: पुरुषेणेह हातव्या भूतिमिच्छिता।
निद्रा तन्द्रा भयं क्रोध आलस्यं दीर्घसूत्रता।।12।।

English Transliteration

Ṣaḍ Doṣāḥ Puruṣeṇeha Hātavyā Bhūtimicchitā

Nidrā Tandrā Bhayaṁ Krodha Ālasyaṁ Dīrghasūtratā।।12।।

Meaning- Men who seek austerity or advancement should give up sleep, sleep (sleepiness), fear, anger, laziness and longevity (the habit of spending more time in hurrying tasks) - these six deities.


Sanskrit Verse-

षडेव तु गुणाः पुंसा न हातव्याः कदाचन।
सत्यं दानमनालस्यमनसूया क्षमा धृतिः।।13।।

English Transliteration

Ṣaḍeva Tu Guṇāḥ Puṁsā Na Hātavyāḥ Kadāchana

Satyaṁ Dānamanālasyamanasūyā Kṣamā Dr̥tiḥ।।13।।

Meaning- Man should never renounce these six qualities of truth, charity, diligence, anasuya (lack of tendency to show fault in virtues), forgiveness and patience.


Sanskrit Verse-

षण्णामात्मनि नित्यानामैश्वर्यं योधिगच्छति।
न स पापैः कुतो नर्थैंर्युज्यते विजेतेँद्रियः।।14।।

English Transliteration

Ṣaṇṇāmātmani Nityānāmaiśvaryaṁ Yodhigacchati

Na Sa Pāpaiḥ Kuto Narthairyujyate Vijetendriyaḥ।।14।।

Meaning- The six enemies who are constantly in the mind - kama, anger, greed, fascination, item and mats, who can subdue, do not indulge in sinful male sins, then what about the sins arising from them.


Sanskrit Verse-

ईर्ष्यी घृणी न संतुष्टः क्रोधनो नित्याशङ्कितः।
परभाग्योपजीवी च षडेते नित्यदुः खिताः।।15।।

English Transliteration

Īrṣyī Gr̥iṇī Na Saṁtuṣṭaḥ Krodheno Nityāśankitaḥ

Parabhāgyopajīvī Cha Ṣaḍete Nityaduḥ Khitāḥ।।15।।

Meaning- Jealous, hateful, dissenting, resentful, perpetually determined and subsistence on the fate of others - these six are always unhappy.


Sanskrit Verse-

अष्टौ गुणाः पुरुषं दीपयन्ति
प्रज्ञा च कौल्यं च दमः श्रुतं च।
पराक्रमश्चाबहुभाषिता च
दानं यथाशक्ति कृतज्ञता च।।16।।

English Transliteration

Aṣṭau Guṇāḥ Puruṣaṁ Dīpayanti Pragñā Cha Kaulyaṁ Cha Damaḥ Śrutaṁ Cha

Parākramaśchābahubhāṣitā Cha Dānaṁ Yathāśakti Kritagñatā Cha।।16।।

Meaning- Wisdom, nobility, sensuality, scripture, might, excess speaking, charity according to strength and gratitude - these eight guns enhance the fame of a man.


Sanskrit Verse-

प्राप्यापदं न व्यथते कदाचि-

दुद्योगमन्विच्छति चाप्रमत्तः।
दुःखं च काले सहते महात्मा
धुरन्धरस्तस्य जिताः सप्तनाः।।17।।

English Transliteration

Prāpyāpadaṁ Na Vyathate Kadāchidudyogamanvicchati Chapramattaḥ

Duḥkhaṁ Cha Kāle Sahate Mahatmā Dhurandharastasya Jitaḥ Saptanāh।।17।।

Meaning- The Enemy who never hurts at the objection, takes shelter of the industry with caution and suffers from time to time, his enemies are defeated.


Sanskrit Verse-

यो नोद्धतं कुरुते जातु वेषं
न पौरुषेणापि विकत्थतेन्यान।
न मूर्छित: कटुकान्याह किञ्चित्
प्रियं सदा तं कुरुते जानो हि।।18।।

English Transliteration

Yo Noddhataṁ Kurute Jatu Veṣaṁ Na Pauruṣeṇāpi Vikatthatenyāna

Na Mūrchitaḥ Katukānyāha Kinchit Priyaṁ Sadā Taṁ Kurute Jāno Hi।।18।।

Meaning- One who never makes a good attitude, does not boast of his might in front of others, does not speak sarcasm despite being distraught with anger, people always make that man cute.


Sanskrit Verse-

अनुबंधानपक्षेत सानुबन्धेषु कर्मसु।
सम्प्रधार्य च कुर्वीत न वेगेन समाचरेत्।19।।

English Transliteration

Anubandhānapakṣeta Sānubandheṣu Karmasu

Sampradharya Cha Kurbīta Na Vegena Samācharet।।19।।

Meaning- The deeds done for any purpose should be understood first. One should work with a lot of thought, do not start any work in haste.


Sanskrit Verse-

भक्ष्योत्तमप्रतिच्छन्नं मत्स्यो वडिशमायसम्।
लोभाभिपाती ग्रस्ते नानुबन्धमवेक्षते।।20।।

English Transliteration

Bhakṣyottamapraticchannaṁ Matsyo Vaḍiśamāyasaṁ

Lobhabhipātī Grastre Nānubandumvekṣate।।

Meaning- The fish swallows an iron fork covered with fine bait and does not consider the consequences.


Sanskrit Verse-

कर्मणा मनसा वाचा यदभीक्षणं निषेवते।

 तदेवापहरत्येनं तस्मात् कल्याणमाचरेत् ॥21।।

English Transliteration

Karmaṇā Manasā Vāchā Yadabhīkṣaṇāṁ Niṣevate

Tadevāpaharatyenaṁ Tasmāt Kalyāṇmācharet।।

 

Meaning- With mind, speech, and action, the thing we constantly think about attracts itself towards us. Therefore, we should always think about auspicious things.


Sanskrit Verse-

असम्यगुपयुक्तं हि ज्ञानं सुकुशलैरपि।

 उपलभ्यं चाविदितं विदितं चाननुष्ठितम्॥22।।

English Transliteration

Asamyaguptayuktaṁ Hi Jñānaṁ Sukuśalairapi

Upalabyaṁ Chāviditaṁ Viditaṁ Chānanuṣṭitaṁ।।22।।

Meaning- That knowledge is useless, so that there is no sense of duty and that duty is also worthless which has no meaning.


Sanskrit Verse-

न विश्चसेदविश्चस्ते विश्चस्ते नातिविश्चसेत्। 

विश्चासाद् भयमुत्पन्न मुलान्यपि निकृन्तति ॥23।।

English Transliteration

Na Viśchasedaviśchaste Viśchaste Nātiviśchaset

Viśchāśad Bhayamutpanna Mulānyapi Nikr̥ntati ।।23।।

Meaning- Do not trust a person who is not trustworthy, but who is very reliable, do not blindly trust him, because when such people break the trust, there is great harm.


Sanskrit Verse-

सत्येन रक्ष्यते धर्मो विद्या योगेन रक्ष्यते ।

 मृजया रक्ष्यते रुपं कुलं वृत्तेन रक्ष्यते ॥24।।

English Transliteration

Satyena Rakṣyate Dharmo Vidyā Yogena Rakṣyate

Mr̥jayā Rakṣate Rupaṁ Kulaṁ Vr̥ttena Rakṣate ।।24।।

Meaning- Religion is protected by truth, education is protected by practice, beauty is protected by cleanliness and clan is protected by virtue.


Sanskrit Verse-

पर्जन्यनाथाः पशवो राजानो मन्त्रिबान्धवाः ।

 पतयो बान्धवाः स्त्रीणां ब्राह्मणा वेदबान्धवाः ॥25।।

English Transliteration

Parjanyanāthāḥ Paśavo Rājāno Mantribāndhavāḥ

Patayo Bāndhavāḥ Strīṇāṁ Brāhmaṇā Vedabānghabāḥ।।25।।

 

Meaning- The protectors of animals are clouds, the protectors of the king are his ministers, the guards of wives are their husbands and the protectors of Vedos are Brahmins (wise men).
