संख्याशब्दाः 

एकस्मिन् गुरुकुले गुरुः कश्चन् ध्यानमग्नः आसीत्।  तदा छात्राः बहवः आगत्य आचार्ये! नमो नमः। आचार्य! पार्श्वस्थे ग्रामे अद्य रथोत्सवः प्रचलति। अद्य अस्माकं गुरुकुले विरामः अस्ति।

अतः वयं छात्राः सर्वे अपि तत्र गत्वा रथोत्सवं दृष्ट्वा सायंकाले प्रत्यागच्छामः। कृपया अनुमतिं यच्छतु इति अयाचन्।  गुरुः अपि अनुमतिम् अददात्। 

परन्तु गुरोः एका चिन्ता उत्पन्ना यत् "रथोत्सव जनसम्मर्दः अधिकः भवति। तत्र यदि छात्रेषु कश्चन् परिभ्रष्टः भवेत् तर्हि किं कुर्मः ?" इति। ततः एकम उपयाम अकरोत्। तदानुसारम् छात्रान् आहूय अवदत् "भो प्रियच्छात्राः! अधिकः भवति। अतः युष्मासु ज्येष्ठः अस्ति रामः। सः युष्मान जागरूकतया नयति" इति। 

एवं उक्त्वा अनन्तरम् "हे राम! अत्र आगच्छ त्वं संख्या सम्यक जानासि किम?" इति अपृच्छत्। तत् श्रुत्वा रामः संख्याम् वक्तुं आरभते एकम्, द्वे, त्रीणि, चत्वारि, पञ्च, षट, सप्त, अष्ट, नव दश इति।      

एतेन् संतुष्टः गुरुः छात्रान् गणयति प्रथमः, द्वितीयः, तृतीयः, चतुर्थः, पञ्चमः, षष्ठः, सप्तमः, अष्टमः, नवमः, दशमः इति। गणयित्वा हे प्रियाः! पश्यन्तु भवन्तः दश छात्राः सन्ति। मध्ये मध्ये परिशीलयन्तु सर्वे आगताः वा, अथवा कश्चन् परिच्युतः वा इति अवदत्। 

अनंतरम् सर्वे अपि छात्राः सोत्साहं रथोत्सवे भागं गृहीत्वा, ग्रामं अटित्वा, मधुरं भुक्त्वा च प्रत्यागच्छन्तः आसनः। तदा रामः भो मित्राणि क्षणम् अत्रैव तिष्ठन्तु। 

एकवारं सर्वे अपि सन्ति वा इति गणयामि इति उक्त्वा आत्मानं त्यक्त्वा अन्यान् सर्वान् गणयति एकम्, द्वे, त्रीणि, चत्वारि, पञ्च, षट, सप्त, अष्ट, नव इति। अये! दशमः कुत्रे? अस्मासु कश्चन परिच्युतः अस्ति इति रोदितुं आरभत्। 

एवमेव अन्य अपि छात्राः आत्मानं त्यक्त्वा अन्यान् सर्वान् अगणयन्। तदा कश्चन् पथिकः छात्राणां कोलाहलं दृष्ट्वा का समस्या? इति अपृच्छत्। छात्राः सर्वं वृत्तान्तं अवदन्। 

तत् श्रुत्वा हसन् सर्वे भवन्तः पङ्क्तिरूपेण तिष्ठन्तु इति उक्त्वा एकः, द्वौ, त्रयः, चत्वारः, पञ्चमः, षष्ठः, सप्तमः, अष्ठमः, नवमः, दशमः इति छात्रान् गणयित्वा पदर्शयति पश्यन्तु भवन्तः दशः एव छात्राः सन्ति। न कोपि परिभ्रष्टः इति। तदा छात्राः गणने कृतं दोषं अजानन्।

In a school, the teacher was meditating. Many student came and said " O Teacher, in the nearby village today there is a temple car festival. Today is a holiday in our school. 

So, we students want  to go  see the temple car festival and return by evening. Please give us your permission. The teacher also gave his permission. 

But, one thought came to the teacher, A the temple car festival, there will be a huge crowd. What will we do if a student gets lost? Therefore he came up with a plan. Accordingly, he called the students and said, " My dear students! At the temple car festival there will be a large number of people. Amongst you, the oldest is Rama. He will lead you carefully."

Having said this, he said again "O! Rama! Come here, do you numbers well?" Hearing this Rama Started counting, "one, Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten," thus.

Pleased by this the guru started counting the students, "first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth". Hey students! Look, there are ten of you students. Keep checking in the middle whether all of you are there, or if someone is lost."

after this all the students went to the car festival, roamed around the village, ate sweets, and were returning back. Then Rama said, "O friends! Stand here for a minute."

"Let me count once if all us are here". He omitted himself and counted the other students. "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. O! where is the tenth? One of us is missing" and he started crying.

Hearing this, the other students also counted all the other students, omitting themselves. Then, a traveler saw the commotion of the students asked what was the problem. The students told him the whole story.

Hearing this, laughingly the traveller asked them to stand in line, counting one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten. He said, "You can clearly see there are ten students. No one is missing. Then the students understood the mistake in their counting.

एक स्कूल में शिक्षक ध्यान कर रहे थे। बहुत से छात्र आए और बोले "हे गुरु जी, आज पास के गांव में मंदिर का रथ उत्सव है। आज हमारे स्कूल में छुट्टी है।

इसलिए, हम छात्र मंदिर कार उत्सव देखने जाना चाहते हैं और शाम तक लौटना चाहते हैं। कृपया हमें अपनी अनुमति दें। शिक्षक ने भी अनुमति दे दी।

लेकिन, शिक्षक के मन में एक विचार आया, एक मंदिर कार उत्सव, बहुत भीड़ होगी। अगर कोई छात्र खो गया तो हम क्या करेंगे? इसलिए वह एक योजना लेकर आया। तदनुसार, उन्होंने छात्रों को बुलाया और कहा, "मेरे प्यारे छात्रों! मंदिर कार उत्सव में बड़ी संख्या में लोग होंगे। आप में से सबसे बड़े राम हैं। वह सावधानी से आपका नेतृत्व करेंगे।"

ऐसा कहकर वे फिर बोले, "हे राम! यहाँ आओ, क्या तुम अच्छे से गिनते हो?" यह सुनकर राम इस प्रकार "एक, दो, तीन, चार, पांच, छह, सात, आठ, नौ, दस" गिनने लगे।

इससे प्रसन्न होकर गुरु ने छात्रों की गिनती शुरू की, "पहले, दूसरे, तीसरे, चौथे, पांचवें, छठे, सातवें, आठवें, नौवें, दसवें"। हे छात्रों! देखो, तुम दस विद्यार्थी हो। बीच-बीच में चेक करते रहें कि आप सब हैं या कोई खो गया है।"

इसके बाद सभी छात्र कार महोत्सव में गए, गांव में घूमे, मिठाई खाई और वापस लौट रहे थे। तब राम ने कहा, "हे मित्रो! यहाँ एक मिनट के लिए खड़े हो जाओ।"

"मुझे एक बार गिनने दो अगर हम सब यहाँ हैं"। उसने खुद को छोड़ दिया और अन्य छात्रों को गिना। "एक, दो, तीन, चार, पांच, छह, सात, आठ, नौ। ओह! दसवां कहाँ है? हम में से एक गायब है" और वह रोने लगा।

यह सुनकर दूसरे छात्रों ने भी अपने आप को छोड़कर सभी छात्रों की गिनती की। तभी छात्रों का हंगामा देख एक राहगीर ने पूछा कि क्या दिक्कत है। छात्रों ने उन्हें पूरी कहानी बताई।

यह सुनकर मुसाफिर ने हंसते हुए उन्हें एक, दो, तीन, चार, पांच, छह, सात, आठ, नौ और दस गिनते हुए कतार में खड़े होने को कहा। उन्होंने कहा, "आप स्पष्ट रूप से देख सकते हैं कि दस छात्र हैं। कोई भी गायब नहीं है। तब छात्रों को उनकी गिनती में गलती समझ में आई।
